Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD) - is a mental health condition caused by long-term trauma, such as ongoing abuse or violence. It includes symptoms similar to PTSD, like flashbacks and anxiety, but also adds difficulties with emotions, self-esteem, and relationships. People with C-PTSD may feel trapped with persistent feelings of helplessness, guilt, shame and chronic feelings of being different from others. These complexities make C-PTSD a distinct and more pervasive condition, requiring tailored therapeutic approaches for effective treatment. See more: What is C-PTSD?

Childhood Emotional Neglect (CEN) - is a type of C-PTSD that is easily overlooked because it involves what didn't happen rather than what did. It’s a type of psychological mistreatment that goes unnoticed, overshadowed and missed by the more obvious forms of C-PTSD such as physical, sexual or verbal abuse. CEN is a deficiency of authentic emotional validation that starts in your childhood and affects your ability to function in every way as an adult. On the outside everything may look “normal” but inside you struggle to hide a deep sense of inadequacy, feelings of worthlessness, low self-esteem and even outright self-hate. It’s exhausting. “Over-Thinking” - is dwelling excessively on thoughts by inspecting, scrutinizing and analyzing situations, events, or decisions in great detail. “Over-thinkers” may ruminate on past actions, worry excessively about future choices, or dissect every possible detail of a situation. While critical thinking and analysis are highly valuable traits, “over-thinking” is oppressive and overwhelming. See more: What is “Over-Thinking?”

The “Only Child” Experience - Growing up as an only child is a unique and multifaceted circumstance, often marked by a deep sense of independence, maturity, self-esteem, confidence and an acceleration of intellectual and emotional development. But within a stressful family situation, or after a traumatic event, an only child’s experience can become confusing, chaotic and overwhelming due to the lack of external perspectives from siblings or anyone else. This can lead the only child to a disproportionate, and sometimes debilitating, sense of isolation and loneliness as they excessive rely on themselves to make sense of the difficulties around them.
